About Dual Diagnosis

Co-Occurring Disorders

Living with either a substance use disorder or a mental health illness is tough, but managing both simultaneously can be extremely difficult. Our staff does a thorough pre-assessment to assess if you require a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis treatment. Establishing these co-occurring disorders early on in the rehabilitation process allows proper treatments to begin promptly. We welcome clients with co-occurring disorders rather than excluding them due to their psychiatric condition.

Co-Occurring Disorders and Addiction

What Are Co-Occurring Disorders?

It is observed that people with mental health conditions tend to suffer more from substance use disorders. In the United States alone, around 9.2 million adults are suffering from co-occurring disorders, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2018) by SAMHSA. Most people finding solace in drugs and alcohol are later diagnosed with co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, personality disorder, and mental trauma.

The Common Link Between Substance Abuse & Dual-Diagnosis

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration states that co-occurring disorders exist when a combination of two or more substance use disorders and mental disorders are identified. A mental disorder is often not diagnosed until after a patient has become a substance abuser. Substance abuse and mental illness are caused by overlapping factors such as brain deficits, genetic vulnerabilities, and early exposure to trauma; these are reasons they can occur separately or concurrently. Patients treated for mental illness often misuse alcohol, opioids, marijuana, tobacco, and other prescription drugs.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety refers to the severe mental distresses that can harm both the physical and mental health of individuals. As the most common psychiatric issue, anxiety also vandalizes everyday social life and can create dents in close relationships. Various anxiety issues directly result from specific combinations of mental illness and co-occurring addiction disorders. Significant anxiety symptoms include:

  • Constantly Worrying.
  • Sweating.
  • Increased Heart Rate.
  • Withdrawal from social connections.

Depression

Clinical depression and addiction defeat the immune system and can sometimes be the leading cause of suicide among substance users. Studies reveal that depressive, disorders when combined with drug addiction, increase suicide rates to about 25 percent. Common symptoms of depression include sadness or grief that lasts for several months, sleeping disorders, losing interest in work, negative pessimistic thinking, decreased libido, etc.

OCD

People with OCD live with obsessive and compulsive thoughts that break the rhythm of their life. Living with co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders such as OCD is quite devastating. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), more than 25 percent of people struggling with OCD are prone to various substance use disorders. At Avatar, medically-assisted detoxification and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the necessary treatment for OCD.

PTSD & Trauma

People who have undergone trauma go through PTSD as well. Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is a complicated psychiatric disorder that can eventually lead to substance abuse. Sometimes people attempt to cope with the trauma by turning to a substance, which results in addiction. Warning signs of symptoms of PTSD include frequent night terrors, unforgettable flashbacks of particular incidents, Insomnia, and panic attacks from time to time.

Personality Disorders

A personality disorder impacts how individuals perceive themselves and those around them; their perception affects their lives and alters how they think, act, and behave. These individuals usually struggle to create and maintain relationships. They might work academically, in their jobs, and have difficulty coping with stress.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that causes erratic shifts in mood, behavior, concentration, and energy levels. It is one of the more common comorbidities with substance abuse; alcohol is often the most common substance. Treating co-occurring mood disorders with psychotherapeutic intervention will reduce substance cravings and overall outcomes.
